New Delhi, Feb 24: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a new Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 1,677 crore, marking a major boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s aviation infrastructure and tourism potential.
Announcing the decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will be developed over 73.18 acres and feature a state-of-the-art terminal building spanning 71,500 square metres, including 20,659 square metres of the existing structure. The new facility is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours, with an annual capacity of 10 million passengers per annum (MPPA).
The expanded apron will accommodate 15 aircraft parking bays, including one Code E wide-body aircraft, with nine existing and six new bays. The 3,658-metre-long runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The project also includes a multi-level car parking facility with space for 1,000 vehicles and the construction of barracks for security personnel.
Srinagar International Airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India within the Budgam Airbase of the IAF, was designated as an international airport in 2005 and is located around 12 kilometres from Srinagar city.
The upcoming terminal will blend modern architecture with Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating traditional woodwork and locally inspired craftsmanship. At the same time, it will ensure operational efficiency with streamlined passenger processing areas, spacious lounges, and advanced security and check-in systems.
Sustainability features are central to the project, including advanced water harvesting systems, maximised natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, and the use of locally sourced eco-friendly materials to minimise carbon footprint. The project aims to secure a prestigious 5-star GRIHA rating.
The government said the new Civil Enclave is expected to significantly enhance connectivity to major tourist attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens. It is also projected to generate employment opportunities, attract investment, and further strengthen Srinagar’s position as a key tourist and economic destination.
The development marks a transformative step toward providing world-class airport infrastructure while showcasing the cultural and natural beauty of Kashmir to global travellers.
