Leh, Mar 29: A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kisan Morcha held meeting with the Chief Animal Husbandry Officer in Leh to raise concerns over the functioning of schemes and support systems linked to the livestock sector, underscoring the need for improved delivery mechanisms in the region.
The delegation, led by Lozang Larje, along with General Secretary Dr. Morup Dorjay and Joint Secretary Phunchok Norbu, held discussions with Dr. Stanzin Rabgais on a range of issues affecting farmers and livestock owners.
According to officials familiar with the meeting, the delegation highlighted difficulties faced by farmers in accessing Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans for livestock, pointing to procedural delays and limited outreach. Concerns were also raised about the availability and quality of subsidised animal fodder, which they said directly impacts productivity and sustainability in the sector.
The delegation further called for targeted measures to enhance milk production in Ladakh, noting that local conditions require region-specific strategies and consistent technical support.
Sources said the meeting, held under the guidance of Tashi Gyaltson, also touched upon broader challenges confronting livestock-dependent households, including gaps in policy implementation and delays in assistance.
Emphasising the economic importance of animal husbandry in the Union Territory, the delegation urged the department to ensure timely delivery of schemes and strengthen field-level coordination.
Officials described the interaction as a “constructive exchange,” with both sides acknowledging the need for sustained engagement to address bottlenecks and support the growth of the sector.
The discussions concluded with an assurance of continued coordination between stakeholders to improve service delivery and safeguard the livelihoods of farmers dependent on livestock in Ladakh.
