Bangladesh Feb 13 : Tarique Rahman, 60, BNP acting chairperson and son of ex-PM Khaleda Zia, is set to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister following his party’s claimed victory in the first polls since the 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina.
BNP says it secured enough seats to form government, though Election Commission results are pending; Jamaat-e-Islami challenged vote credibility citing inconsistencies.
Rahman, who returned from UK exile in Dec 2024 after his mother’s death, vowed to build on his parents’ legacy: “They are them, I am me. I will try to do better.” Born during 1971 war, he faced early detention, corruption charges (denied as political), and led from abroad amid family rivalry with Hasinas.
The student-led protests killed 1,400+, toppled Hasina over corruption/economy woes; Rahman calls nation “destroyed” by her regime, apologizes for any BNP errors.
