DHAKA, MAR 10: Bangladesh has kicked off efforts to bring back two suspected assassins accused of gunning down student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, just a day after West Bengal police caught them sneaking across the border illegally.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced the extradition push during a press meet in Cox’s Bazaar, while Police Chief Mohammad Ali Hossain Fakir detailed diplomatic moves targeting Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain.
Hadi, 32, a fiery India critic and Inqilab Moncho spokesperson, shot to fame amid the 2024 protests that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League. Masked bikers shot him in the head on December 12 during his Dhaka campaign for the February 12 elections; he died days later in Singapore despite airlift.
The attack sparked chaos—his supporters torched cultural hubs like Chhayanat and Udichi, plus major dailies Prothom Alo and Daily Star.
West Bengal cops, acting on a tip, nabbed the duo hiding near the border, with early grilling linking them to the murder. This breakthrough comes post-BNP’s February power grab under Tarique Rahman, after tensions peaked under Yunus’s interim rule when Bangladesh first cried foul over India sheltering the killers—claims Delhi then denied.
