LEH: SNM District Hospital Leh, in collaboration with Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and Health and Wellness Centres across the district, on Thursday marked the completion of 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) with a series of awareness activities aimed at strengthening maternal healthcare and promoting safe motherhood.
Celebrated under the theme, “10 Years of PMSMA – A Decade of Care,” the programme highlighted the initiative’s contribution to improving maternal health through quality antenatal services and early identification of high-risk pregnancies.
An awareness session formed a major part of the event, during which Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Ayesha Malo spoke on maternal nutrition, warning signs during pregnancy and the importance of regular antenatal check-ups to ensure the health and well-being of both mother and child.
Addressing the gathering, District Health Officer and Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Norbu Angchuk underscored the role of PMSMA in enhancing maternal healthcare services and ensuring safer pregnancies through timely medical interventions and monitoring.
Gynaecologist Dr Stanzin Dolker stressed the importance of early pregnancy registration, routine antenatal care and institutional deliveries. She also commended the contribution of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and other frontline healthcare workers for their continued efforts in strengthening maternal and child healthcare services across the district.
The programme also featured an awareness session on the 108 Ambulance Service, which provides free round-the-clock emergency transportation for pregnant women and other medical emergencies, helping improve access to healthcare facilities.
Around 20 to 25 pregnant women, along with AMT students, ANMs, ASHAs and healthcare personnel, participated in the event, reaffirming the district’s continued focus on maternal health awareness and preventive healthcare.
