Kargil, Jan 09: A major tragedy was narrowly avoided in Baroo locality of Kargil district on Friday after a sudden fire broke out in a cluster of residential houses, prompting a swift and well-coordinated response from personnel of the Indian Army’s Baroo camp. Their timely arrival, coupled with the efforts of the Kargil Fire Brigade, helped bring the situation under control before the blaze could engulf nearby homes.
Local residents said the fire sparked panic across the neighbourhood as strong winds and closely packed structures created a high risk of the flames spreading fast. “It could have turned far worse within minutes,” a resident shared while recalling the chaos that unfolded soon after the fire erupted.
Upon receiving information, Army teams rushed to the spot carrying fire fighting gear and water support. They immediately joined hands with the Fire Brigade, forming a combined response unit that worked relentlessly to contain the blaze from multiple directions.
Officials said the coordinated effort greatly stabilised the situation during the initial tense moments when the fire threatened to advance towards adjoining houses. Residents credited the prompt action of the Army personnel for reinforcing the fire fighting operation at a time when the intensity of the flames posed a serious threat.
Fire fighters, with the Army’s assistance, succeeded in dousing the fire within a short span, reducing potential damage and ensuring that no lives were lost. Quick movement, access to additional resources, and the ability to act decisively proved crucial in preventing the incident from developing into a broader community disaster.
Authorities are assessing the cause of the fire and taking stock of the losses. Meanwhile, the combined effort has drawn appreciation from the local population, who hailed the Army and Fire Brigade for their prompt humanitarian role in protecting lives and property.
