SFs intensify Search Ops in Akhal and Kishtwar to trace terrorists
Srinagar/Jammu, Aug 13: The Indian Army successfully thwarted a daring infiltration attempt by Pakistan’s Border Action Team along the Line of Control in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir during the night of August 12 and 13. The fierce encounter near Tikka Post in the Churunda area of Baramulla district resulted in the martyrdom of Havaldar Ankit, who was killed while defending the frontier.
The clash began when alert Indian troops detected the movement of the BAT, a specialized unit consisting of Pakistani military personnel and terrorists, trying to breach the LoC under the cover of darkness. A heavy exchange of gunfire followed as Indian soldiers swiftly responded to the incursion.
Despite poor visibility and harsh weather conditions, the Army’s resolute counterattack forced the infiltrators to retreat across the border. Havaldar Ankit, remembered for his exceptional bravery, succumbed to injuries sustained during the intense firefight. The Army immediately launched a large-scale cordon and search operation in the Churunda area to locate any remaining infiltrators, with sporadic gunfire continuing into Wednesday morning.
Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details about the progress of the operation or possible further casualties. The incident comes amid heightened tensions along the LoC, fueled by provocative remarks from Pakistani leadership.
The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps expressed deep grief over Havaldar Ankit’s sacrifice, stating on X that they salute the valor and dedication of the brave soldier who gave his life in service to the nation. The Corps pledged to maintain heightened vigilance, especially ahead of Independence Day, as security forces remain on alert for further infiltration attempts.
This confrontation adds to a series of cross-border skirmishes in the region, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by troops guarding one of India’s most volatile borders. The rugged terrain and adverse weather often complicate counter-infiltration operations in the area.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief SP Vaid also commented on X, noting that the timing of the attack coincided with inflammatory remarks made by Pakistani officials, including General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who referenced nuclear posturing against India. These claims remain unverified but contribute to the tense border situation.
In a separate development, the Indian Army reported the death of Sepoy Banoth Anil Kumar, who laid down his life in Baramulla. General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff, along with all ranks of the Indian Army, offered their deepest condolences to his family.
Meanwhile, Operation Akhal, launched on August 1 following intelligence about terrorist presence in Akhal in South Kashmir, continues in full swing. The prolonged operation has already claimed the lives of Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, while security forces have eliminated more than five terrorists.
Operation Akhal was initiated soon after troops neutralized Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists responsible for the Dachigam massacre during Operation Mahadev near Srinagar. On July 29, the Army also conducted Operation Shiv Shakti, eliminating two more terrorists.
