SRINAGAR, JULY 8: Former District Development Council (DDC) Baramulla Chairperson Safina Baig on Wednesday joined the National Conference (NC), marking a significant political development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Safina Baig formally joined the party during a function at the NC headquarters in Srinagar in the presence of NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Rural Development Minister Javid Ahmad Dar, senior leader Ali Mohammad Sagar, Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan and other party leaders.
She was accompanied by a large number of supporters during the joining ceremony.
Political observers have described Safina Baig’s entry into the National Conference as a major boost for the party’s organisational strength in Baramulla district and north Kashmir. The NC had won six of the seven Assembly constituencies in Baramulla during the 2024 elections.
Safina Baig is the wife of senior politician and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He served as Deputy Chief Minister in the PDP-Congress coalition government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad and represented the Baramulla Assembly constituency in 2002 and 2008. He later won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 general elections.
Her induction into the National Conference is expected to enhance the party’s political outreach and strengthen its presence in north Kashmir ahead of upcoming political developments.
