FSSAI Cracks Down on ‘Energy Drink’ Claims, Issues Notices to Leading Beverage Brands

New Delhi, July 5: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to several leading beverage manufacturers over the use of the term “energy drink” and claims that it says are misleading and not permitted under existing food safety regulations.

According to the food regulator, brands including Red Bull, Monster Energy, Sting, Hell Energy, Adrenaline Rush and Campa Energy have described and marketed their products as “energy drinks” despite the absence of any notified FSSAI standard for such a category.

In a statement, the FSSAI clarified that the Food Category System under its regulations is not intended for product naming or labelling purposes. It also reiterated that food products cannot carry functional or therapeutic claims such as “stimulates mind, energizes body”, “enhances focus”, “boosts energy levels”, or “helps with general weakness” under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related regulations.

Nutrition experts say such claims can mislead consumers into believing the products offer health or performance benefits beyond what is scientifically established. Many of these beverages contain high levels of caffeine, sugar and other stimulants that may provide temporary alertness but can also lead to side effects such as rapid heartbeat, anxiety, dehydration, headaches, disturbed sleep and an energy crash.

Health professionals caution that excessive consumption may pose greater risks for children, teenagers, pregnant women and individuals with heart disease, high blood pressure or caffeine sensitivity.

Experts also emphasise that no beverage can genuinely create energy or permanently improve concentration. While caffeine may temporarily increase alertness and sugar can provide a short-term energy boost, these effects are not a substitute for adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and proper hydration.

As healthier alternatives, nutritionists recommend water, coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water, unsweetened green or black tea, and fresh fruit smoothies without added sugar. A balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and protein is considered the most effective way to maintain steady energy levels.

Doctors also advise that persistent fatigue should not be treated with stimulant beverages alone. Individuals experiencing ongoing tiredness should seek medical evaluation, as it may indicate underlying conditions such as anaemia, thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies or poor sleep quality.
