New Delhi, Jun 12 : Several Congress leaders and workers from Madhya Pradesh were detained by Delhi Police on Friday while marching towards Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest against the rejection of senior party leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections, officials said.
The protesters gathered and attempted to move towards Rashtrapati Bhavan, demanding that Natarajan’s nomination papers be accepted. Police intervened and detained demonstrators to prevent them from proceeding towards the high-security zone.
Speaking during the protest, Congress MLA Jaivardhan Singh said, “The BJP has declared dictatorship in the country. Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination form should be accepted. We approached the Election Commission but did not get justice, and the Supreme Court did not grant us time. We will continue our agitation until Meenakshi Natarajan gets justice.”
The protest comes amid a political row over the rejection of Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha election nomination.
Police said the situation remained under control and the detained protesters were removed from the area as a precautionary measure.
