LEH: The Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies (ABC&AR) Team of the Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, successfully conducted an eight-day sterilisation and vaccination camp in Nimo village, sterilising and vaccinating 286 stray dogs as part of efforts to control the canine population and curb the spread of rabies.

The camp, held from June 2 to June 9, was organised in collaboration with the Army and focused on promoting public health and animal welfare through systematic sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination of stray dogs.

Officials said the initiative was aimed at managing the stray dog population in a humane manner while reducing the risk of rabies transmission in the area.

Throughout the campaign, the department’s specialised ABC&AR team, comprising veterinary doctors, paraveterinary personnel and trained animal handlers, carried out sterilisation procedures and administered anti-rabies vaccines to the animals.

A total of 286 stray dogs were covered during the eight-day drive, reflecting a coordinated effort by the Animal Husbandry Department and the Army to address concerns related to stray animal management and zoonotic diseases.

The department said such interventions form an important part of ongoing measures to improve community safety, enhance animal health and create greater awareness about rabies prevention across the district.
