NYOMA: Marking World Environment Day 2026, the Nyoma Forest Range on Friday carried out a large-scale plantation drive across Changthang district, planting 600 saplings at multiple locations under the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign aimed at promoting environmental conservation and ecological restoration.
The afforestation initiative brought together Forest Department officials, Indian Army personnel, local residents and environmental volunteers, reflecting a broad-based community effort to enhance green cover in the ecologically fragile high-altitude region.
According to officials, 200 saplings were planted at an Indian Army unit in Nyoma, while another 150 saplings were planted in the designated Go Green Area maintained by the Nyoma Forest Range. A further 200 saplings were planted in Teri village, and 50 saplings were planted within the premises of the Forest Range Office in Nyoma.
Officials said the campaign was intended not only to increase vegetation cover but also to strengthen public awareness about environmental protection and sustainable development. They noted that the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative combines a message of gratitude towards mothers with a broader call for citizens to contribute to a healthier environment through tree plantation and long-term care of saplings.
Highlighting the environmental challenges facing the region, officials stressed the importance of collective action in addressing the impacts of climate change and preserving Changthang’s fragile ecosystem. They appealed to institutions, community organisations and residents to actively support afforestation efforts and ensure the survival of newly planted saplings.
The programme concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices aimed at safeguarding the region’s ecological heritage for future generations.
