Sankoo: Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil’s Sankoo Campus conducted a three-day educational field trip to Zanskar aimed at providing students with practical exposure to the region’s historical, cultural, socio-economic and environmental landscape.
The tour, held from May 30 to June 2, involved 21 students from the Departments of Political Science, Economics, Sociology and History. It was organised under the guidance of Principal Disket Angmo and Nodal Officer Saleem Ahmed.
According to the college administration, the field visit was designed to supplement classroom learning through direct observation and interaction, enabling students to examine various dimensions of life and governance in the remote Himalayan region.
Faculty members from different departments accompanied the students, including Dr Gulzar Hussain, Dr Mohd Sharif, Dr Stanzin Yangdol, Assistant Professor Tsering Angmo, Assistant Professor Zarina Banoo and Skill Instructor Shabir Ali.
During the tour, students visited several prominent locations including Karsha Monastery, Bardan Monastery, Sani Monastery, the historic Sani Chorten, Sheela Waterfall, Drang Drung Glacier, Stagrimo Monastery, Sani Lake and Padum Market.
At Karsha Monastery, the students interacted with resident monks and received insights into the institution’s history, administration and role in preserving the region’s cultural traditions. They also met members of the Women’s Alliance of Zanskar and discussed women’s participation in community welfare, local governance and social development initiatives.
Visits to Sheela Waterfall and the Drang Drung Glacier offered an opportunity to study environmental challenges, climate change impacts and the ecological importance of high-altitude natural resources.
College authorities said the programme helped students gain a broader understanding of Zanskar’s diverse heritage while strengthening interdisciplinary learning through field-based academic engagement.
