Kargil, Mar 26: The vaccination programme for Hajj pilgrims ahead of the 2026 pilgrimage commenced in Kargil district on Wednesday, with health authorities administering doses to 259 pilgrims on the opening day across multiple blocks.
The immunisation drive covered several areas including Sankoo, Taisuru, Drass, and Shakar Chiktan, marking the beginning of pre-departure health preparations for pilgrims from the region. Among those vaccinated were two pilgrims categorised under the SHI group.
The programme was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, in the presence of senior health officials and representatives of the Hajj Committee. Officials present included Chief Medical Officer Kargil, Kacho Layiqat Ali; Block Medical Officer Kargil, Dr. Ab. Jalil; and District Vaccination Officer, Dr. Rabiya Banoo.
Chairperson of the Hajj Committee, UT Ladakh, Haji Mohd Ali Majaz, and Executive Officer Zakir Hussain were also present. Welcoming the Deputy Commissioner, Majaz underlined the arrangements made for the pilgrims and said, “All necessary preparations have been put in place to ensure that pilgrims complete their health requirements in a timely and organised manner. We are committed to facilitating a smooth process for every pilgrim from Ladakh.”
Interacting with the pilgrims, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar conveyed his good wishes for their forthcoming journey and expressed hope for peace and prosperity in Ladakh and beyond. He stated, “This vaccination programme is an essential step in ensuring the well-being of our pilgrims. I extend my best wishes for a safe and fulfilling pilgrimage, and pray for harmony and prosperity across the region.”
As part of the ceremonial proceedings, the Deputy Commissioner presented traditional khatak scarves to the pilgrims as a gesture of goodwill.
Health authorities reported that the vaccination process was carried out in an orderly manner at all designated centres across the district, with adequate arrangements in place to ensure smooth coverage.
Meanwhile, in Leh district, the vaccination programme is scheduled to be conducted over two days, March 26 and 27, targeting 64 pilgrims. The designated centres include the Office of the Chief Medical Officer Leh, Sub-District Hospital Diskit, and Primary Health Centre Chuchot.
Officials said coordinated efforts are underway to ensure that all registered pilgrims are vaccinated within the stipulated timeframe, in line with health guidelines for international travel and pilgrimage.
