Fresh WD brings snowfall to Ladakh; weather likely to improve from Mar 21

Leh/Kargil, Mar 20: Under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance, Ladakh and adjoining regions of the Western Himalayas have been witnessing continued inclement weather over the past several days, with snowfall reported in higher reaches and persistent cloud cover affecting much of the region.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus, stated that the entire Western Himalayan belt, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh, has remained under adverse weather conditions for the past two to three days. The prevailing cloud cover has led to a noticeable decline in daytime temperatures, prolonging winter-like conditions across the region.

While rainfall has been recorded in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh has experienced snowfall largely confined to higher altitude areas. Locations such as Zoji La, Panjila, and parts of Zanskar have received fresh snowfall, with reports indicating heavier accumulation along the Zoji La axis. In contrast, the plains of Leh have remained mostly unaffected, with no substantial snowfall reported.

Forecasts indicate that cloudy conditions are likely to persist through March 20, with continued chances of light snowfall in elevated areas. The Kargil region, along with the Drass–Shakula belt, is expected to receive comparatively heavier snowfall during this period.

The ongoing weather disturbance has resulted in a drop of approximately 5 to 6 degrees Celsius in daytime temperatures, while night temperatures have risen slightly by 1 to 2 degrees due to sustained cloud cover. According to the Meteorological Department, intermittent snowfall in higher reaches is expected to continue until March 20.

A change in weather conditions is anticipated from March 21 onwards, with forecasts pointing towards clearer skies. This transition is expected to bring a gradual increase in daytime temperatures, alongside a decline in night temperatures as cloud cover recedes.

Despite the disruptions caused by the current weather conditions, officials have pointed to a constructive aspect of the recent snowfall. Ladakh has been facing a pronounced snowfall deficit this winter, with Leh district recording nearly 72 percent below normal precipitation levels. The fresh snowfall is expected to partially offset this deficit and contribute positively to water availability in the coming months.
