JAMMU, Dec 23: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has released Rs 12.70 crore for a critical stabilization project targeting recurring land subsidence around the picturesque Surinsar Lake, though actual execution will commence only in the next financial year pending procedural clearances.
Official sources revealed that while funds were sanctioned this financial year, utilization awaits Tourism Department clarifications on Administrative Approval and treasury routing discrepancies—specifically correcting Samba treasury to Udhampur for the Surinsar-Mansar Development Authority (SMDA). These formalities must align before tendering can begin, a process expected to take at least three months even after approvals. Post-clarification, SMDA will engage the Roads and Buildings Department to issue tenders for the project designed by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation India Limited (THDCIL).
The released amount forms part of a Rs 37.99 crore comprehensive initiative outlined in THDCIL’s Detailed Project Report (DPR), featuring geo-technical solutions for long-term terrain stabilization, proper drainage in residential zones, and measures to minimize disruptions to public access and tourism. THDCIL identifies poor drainage, silt-clay accumulation causing soil compaction, and rising population density as key subsidence triggers, particularly affecting stretches near the selfie point, Government Higher Secondary School, Shamshan Ghat, and Narsingh Temple. The DPR projects one-year completion post-contract award, though partial funding may extend timelines.
Surinsar Lake has faced persistent monsoon-induced subsidence and road damage, threatening connectivity and safety in this scenic area. THDCIL will supervise implementation to adhere strictly to DPR guidelines, addressing both land stability and drainage deficits exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure in growing settlements.
