Leh, Oct 02: The India Meteorological Department has sounded an alert for Ladakh, forecasting a spell of moderate to heavy rain and snowfall across most parts of the Union Territory from October 5 to October 8. While the region will enjoy clear skies until October 3 and generally cloudy weather on October 4, the conditions are expected to change dramatically from the night of October 5, when widespread precipitation is likely to set in.
According to the advisory, Ladakh will be among the worst affected areas, with both Leh and Kargil districts bracing for heavy snowfall. On October 8, the weather is expected to remain cloudy, with light rain or snow at scattered places. The warning has raised concerns over the movement of vehicles and supplies, as several crucial mountain passes such as Zojila, Shinkula, Parachala, Khardongla and Changla may face temporary closures due to heavy snow accumulation.
Officials have cautioned that the spell could disrupt connectivity to remote areas and pose challenges for residents as well as tourists currently in the region. Farmers have been advised to store their harvested crops in safer locations, while transporters and passengers have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during this period. With the weather deemed unsafe for outdoor activities, adventure tourism and expeditions are also expected to be suspended until conditions improve.
The administration has asked people to stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and keep track of official bulletins. With the likelihood of snow-bound roads, slippery surfaces and potential avalanches, authorities may announce additional measures to mitigate risks in the coming days.
