Nubra, Sept 19: A team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, launched a two-day medical outreach programme at the Sub District Hospital in Diskit on Thursday, drawing hundreds of patients from across Nubra valley.
The initiative was inaugurated in the presence of Deputy Chief Executive Councillor Tsering Angchuk, Sub Divisional Magistrate Mukul Beniwal, Block Medical Officer Dr. Stanzin Phantok, and Security Ashoka Mission representative Tashi Motup.
Eighteen senior specialists representing diverse fields including endocrinology, orthopedics, neurology, plastic surgery, gastroenterology, hematology, gynecology, ophthalmology, medicine and pulmonology are taking part in the exercise. The effort has been designed to provide advanced healthcare services to residents of the remote region who have limited access to tertiary care facilities.
On the opening day, more than 500 patients from surrounding villages received consultations, with special focus on those requiring urgent medical attention. According to health officials, the overwhelming turnout underscored the demand for specialist care in the valley.
The local community in Diskit extended its support by offering refreshments to patients and hosting lunch for the visiting medical team and staff, reflecting the region’s customary hospitality.
The programme will continue on Friday, with consultations expected to draw further crowds from the far-flung hamlets of Nubra.
