India Test-Fires Prithvi-II, Agni-I and Akash Prime Missiles, Showcasing Strategic readiness

New Delhi, Jul 17: India successfully conducted back-to-back test-firings of its nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, Prithvi-II and Agni-I, from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, reinforcing the country’s strategic deterrence capability. These launches, conducted under the Strategic Forces Command, met all operational and technical standards, as confirmed by the Ministry of Defence.

Prithvi-II, with a range of 350 km and a payload capacity of 500 kg, and Agni-I, capable of striking targets up to 900 km with a 1,000 kg payload, form a vital component of India’s nuclear strike force. Both systems are capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads.

This test series comes just over two months after the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in early May. Defence experts see these tests as a clear signal of India’s enhanced readiness and strategic posture.

Adding to the momentum, India also test-fired the Akash Prime missile on July 16 in Ladakh. This upgraded variant of the Akash air defence system is designed to function at altitudes above 4,500 metres and was tested successfully near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The missile intercepted and destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets, showcasing improved precision and capability in high-altitude warfare.

Akash Prime includes an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker and multiple upgrades based on operational feedback. It is tailored specifically for Indian Army deployment in high-altitude conflict zones.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Army, DRDO, and defence industry for their combined effort in achieving this milestone, calling it a strong demonstration of India’s growing indigenous defence ecosystem and operational preparedness.

The successful tests of these strategic and tactical systems underline India’s advancing missile technology and commitment to strengthening its national defence posture.
