SRINAGAR, APR 14 : Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested eight individuals for vandalism during protests against the alleged sexual harassment of a girl student by a senior lecturer in Baramulla’s Sopore area, officials said Tuesday.
Sopore Police booked government higher secondary school lecturer Ghulam Hassan Mir on Monday following the student’s complaint. “We have registered a case against him for sexual assault,” a senior officer confirmed.
Students took to the streets after the incident surfaced, but the protests remained largely peaceful. During the unrest, eight miscreants were nabbed for vandalism, with 25 more identified. “Strict action against those disturbing public order is underway,” police posted on X.
The Education Department swiftly suspended Mir and launched a departmental inquiry, appointing the Joint Director (North Kashmir) as the officer. A report is due within 15 days.
