KOLKATA, FEB 27: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Nayabazar in Bangladesh around 1:22 pm today, sending tremors through Kolkata and nearby West Bengal districts. The quake, at a shallow 10 km depth and about 100 km from Kolkata, lasted roughly 10 seconds, sparking widespread panic.
People rushed out of buildings, offices, and homes to open streets. Government workers at Nabanna secretariat, the assembly, and the Chief Electoral Officer’s office spilled onto the roads, fearing aftershocks. Similar chaos hit Salt Lake’s IT hub and high-rises across the city.
India Meteorological Department officials confirmed no immediate reports of casualties or damage. No aftershocks followed.
