Leh: The Indian Army on Monday commemorated the 42nd anniversary of Siachen Day with solemnity and pride, paying heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who continue to guard the nation’s frontiers under some of the harshest conditions on Earth.
Marking the occasion, Lt Gen Hitesh Bhalla, General Officer Commanding of the Fire and Fury Corps, along with all ranks, honoured the indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifices of the “Bravehearts” deployed in the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier. The soldiers serving in this extreme terrain were lauded for their exemplary professionalism, unmatched courage, and unwavering commitment in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty despite sub-zero temperatures, treacherous crevasses and relentless snowstorms.
Observed every year on April 13, Siachen Day commemorates Operation Meghdoot, the historic military operation launched in 1984 through which Indian forces secured strategic dominance over the Siachen Glacier—widely regarded as the world’s highest battlefield. The operation remains a defining moment in India’s military history, symbolising strategic foresight and operational excellence.
As part of the commemorative events, a wreath-laying ceremony was organized at the Siachen War Memorial, where senior military officers, soldiers and veterans paid homage to those who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony was marked by deep reverence, with attendees observing silence in memory of the fallen heroes.
Senior serving officers and veterans also visited the Siachen Base Camp, where they interacted with troops stationed in the region. During these interactions, they conveyed their appreciation for the soldiers’ resilience and dedication, reaffirming the Army’s unwavering solidarity with those deployed in the unforgiving glacial expanse.
Siachen Day not only honours the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Army personnel but also serves as a reminder of the extraordinary challenges faced by soldiers defending the nation in one of the most inhospitable terrains in the world. The observance reinforces national pride and gratitude towards the Armed Forces, whose vigilance and valour continue to secure India’s frontiers against all odds.
