Jammu, Jul 21: An earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district in the early hours of Thursday, officials said. There were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property, they said.
According to data released by the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake measured 3.1 on the Richter scale and struck at 1:36 am. The epicentre was located near Kishtwar, with seismic activity recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.
The tremor originated at coordinates 33.17°N latitude and 75.87°E longitude. Local authorities and emergency response teams monitored the situation, confirming that no casualties or structural damages were reported.
While the region is no stranger to tectonic activity due to its geographical position along the Himalayan seismic belt, low-intensity earthquakes such as this one serve as a reminder of the need for continued preparedness and adherence to safety protocols in the region.
Experts urge residents in quake-prone areas to remain alert and ensure compliance with standard safety measures, especially during early morning or night-time seismic events.
