Madrid, Jul 31: At least 18 migrants were killed while attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after thousands breached the border separating Morocco and the Spanish territory, triggering a major security and humanitarian response.
Spanish authorities deployed military personnel to Ceuta to help restore order as large numbers of migrants crossed into the enclave. The influx prompted heightened security measures amid concerns over the escalating situation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was scheduled to visit Ceuta on Friday along with Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to assess the situation and oversee the government’s response.
Rachid Sbihi, head of a local workers’ association representing Civil Guard officers, described the developments as a “serious humanitarian crisis,” highlighting the challenges faced by security forces and emergency responders.
Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations while the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.
