New Delhi, Aug 13 : Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here have seized around 10.5 kg of hydroponic weed worth Rs 10 crore and apprehended two male passengers arriving from Thailand’s Phuket, officials said on Thursday.
Hydroponic weed is a high-potency variety of cannabis grown in nutrient-rich water instead of soil.
Acting on specific intelligence, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted the two passengers after they had crossed the green channel upon arrival from Phuket on August 12, an official statement said.
The baggage of the passengers was subjected to X-ray screening, which raised suspicion and prompted a detailed examination, the statement said.
The search led to the recovery of approximately 10.5 kg of hydroponic weed, also known as ganja, concealed in the baggage in a bid to evade detection, it said.
The passengers have been apprehended, and further investigation is underway under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, it added.
