CHICAGO, October 29 : A foiled alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple near Chicago has raised concerns among the region’s South Asian community, prompting calls for stronger security and a thorough investigation into possible hate-motivated violence.

Despite the disturbing incident, community members say they remain determined to celebrate religious festivals and preserve their traditions without fear.

According to prosecutors, 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis allegedly arrived at the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, Illinois, on October 11, as worshippers gathered to mark the beginning of Navaratri. He reportedly sat in the temple’s parking lot but left without firing a shot after his rifle malfunctioned.

Authorities arrested Paporakis later that day near his home in Palatine, around 64 kilometres from the temple, after a co-worker at a Taco Bell alerted officials to his alleged plan to “kill Indian people”.

Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a firearm. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday morning.

Community Calls For Vigilance And Unity

The incident has unsettled members of the Hindu and wider South Asian community, particularly as families gather to celebrate religious festivals.

Asha Rao, executive director of The Chicago Kasam, a nonprofit organisation working to unite the region’s South Asian community, said the alleged plot had left people shocked and disturbed.

She noted that festivals such as Navaratri are traditionally occasions for families and friends to come together in a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

Avatans Kumar, a freelance columnist who occasionally visits the targeted temple, said worshippers had become more alert following the incident.

He observed that people were paying closer attention to their surroundings and looking for signs of possible disturbances during community gatherings.

Rao said some residents had become more hesitant about attending celebrations, but she also highlighted a renewed determination among community members to uphold their traditions and support one another.

Leaders Seek Hate-Crime Investigation

South Asian community representatives and political leaders are urging law enforcement agencies to investigate whether the alleged plot was motivated by racial or religious hatred.

Prosecutors have alleged that Paporakis identified himself as a white supremacist and neo-Nazi and used hateful language and slurs against Indians and other minority groups.

US Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat whose constituency includes the targeted temple, has called on the FBI to investigate the case as a potential hate crime and pursue appropriate charges.

Authorities have also reportedly recovered weapons, ammunition, a gas canister bearing an anti-South Asian slur and several items displaying Nazi symbols from the suspect’s home.

Officials said Paporakis had written a lengthy note in which he allegedly fantasised about mass murder and expressed a desire to kill as many non-white people as possible.

Concerns Over Rising Anti-South Asian Hate

The alleged plot has revived concerns about racial harassment and hostility directed at South Asian communities in the United States.

According to data cited by Stop AAPI Hate, the use of anti-South Asian slurs online increased by 109 per cent between 2023 and 2025. The organisation also reported that nearly half of South Asian adults surveyed said they had experienced a hate incident linked to their race, ethnicity or nationality in the previous year.

The South Asian American Policy and Research Institute reported that Illinois’ South Asian population increased from more than 242,000 in 2010 to over 337,000 in 2020, accounting for approximately 2.5 per cent of the state’s population.

Community members have said bullying and race-based harassment remain concerns for many South Asian residents.

Rishab Chatty, who leads the Chicago chapter of Hindus for Human Rights, said hostility towards Hindus and South Asians appeared to be moving beyond online spaces and school settings into increasingly violent forms.

The incident has also raised broader questions about safety, belonging and the protection of minority communities.

As the Hindu community prepares for upcoming celebrations, including Diwali, residents say they intend to remain vigilant while continuing to come together in support of their faith, families and cultural traditions.
