New Delhi, September 30: The new Class 9 Social Science textbook published by NCERT links the mottos of several modern Indian institutions with ideas and texts from India’s traditional literary and philosophical heritage.
The textbook, ‘Understanding Society: India and Beyond – Part 2’, states that India’s national motto, ‘Satyamev Jayate’, is derived from the Mundaka Upanishad, while the Supreme Court of India’s motto, ‘Yato Dharmas Tato Jayah’, has its origins in the Mahabharata.
According to the chapter ‘Governance and Public Policy’, ‘Satyamev Jayate’ means “Truth alone triumphs” and was adopted as India’s national motto after Independence.
The textbook explains that Indian institutions have continued to draw upon traditional ideas and values while adapting them to the requirements of a modern democratic system.
It also states that the Supreme Court motto ‘Yato Dharmas Tato Jayah’ means “Where there is dharma, there is victory”, and is taken from the Mahabharata.
The textbook says these institutional mottos are not merely symbolic but represent the values and ideals associated with public institutions and their responsibility to ensure good governance.
The second part of the Class 9 Social Science textbook was released recently as part of the broader transition to revised learning material under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The NCERT syllabus for the book includes six chapters covering areas related to history, geography, political science and economics.
