LEH, July 4: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on Friday said the rejuvenation of the Matho water reservoir has been completed under the ambitious Project Him Sarovar, significantly enhancing water storage capacity and strengthening agricultural security in the region.
The Lieutenant Governor said he had directed officials to restore the water body during his first visit to Matho on April 17, when the reservoir was completely dried up and filled with muck.
Following the restoration work, the reservoir is now fully functional and capable of storing 25 to 30 million litres of glacier-melt water, a substantial increase from its earlier capacity of around 15 million litres.
According to the LG, the revived reservoir will provide irrigation support to nearly 150 acres of agricultural land, improving water availability and enhancing the region’s agricultural resilience.
He further said that the successful restoration marks the operationalisation of three major water bodies across Ladakh since April 10 under Project Him Sarovar, an initiative aimed at strengthening long-term water conservation and climate resilience.
The Lieutenant Governor said the project is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of conserving water resources to ensure future water security.
He added that the administration remains committed to building a resilient, self-reliant and prosperous Ladakh through sustained efforts to improve water infrastructure and safeguard vital natural resources.
