Sanju Samson Under Pressure As India Face England In 2nd T20I; Tilak Varma’s Form Also Under Scrutiny

MANCHESTER, JULY 4 : India will head into the second T20 International against England at Old Trafford on Saturday with the spotlight firmly on wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, whose inconsistent performances have once again come under scrutiny. Alongside Samson, Tilak Varma’s inability to accelerate during the middle overs has also emerged as a concern for the Indian team management.

The opening T20I at Chester-le-Street was washed out after India posted a competitive 189 for 7, thanks to half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer. However, Samson failed to make an impact, managing just one run off seven deliveries, further intensifying questions over his place in the playing XI.

With teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting in the wings, Samson faces increasing pressure to convert his sporadic successes into consistent performances. Despite his contributions during India’s T20 World Cup triumph, the emergence of Sooryavanshi has significantly reduced Samson’s margin for error.

Abhishek Sharma’s recent scores of 49 and 59 have strengthened his position at the top of the order, leaving Samson with little room for another disappointing outing.

Samson has often struggled on seaming pitches, with his technical shortcomings against moving deliveries continuing to haunt him. His career has been marked by occasional big innings interspersed with a series of low scores, a pattern that has repeatedly hindered his progress.

Although the Indian team management is not keen to rush the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi into the playing XI, continued failures from Samson could force a rethink in the coming matches.

Tilak Varma has also come under the scanner for his conservative approach during the middle overs. The talented left-hander has found it difficult to accelerate against spin and slower bowling, managing just 12 sixes in 12 T20Is this year—an underwhelming return for a player expected to finish innings strongly.

India are unlikely to make changes to their bowling attack, with the Old Trafford surface expected to offer assistance to wrist spinners. Incidentally, the best bowling figures in a T20I at the venue belong to Kuldeep Yadav, who is not part of the current squad.

England, meanwhile, will rely on their explosive batting unit led by captain Harry Brook, alongside Phil Salt and Tom Banton. Fast bowler Jofra Archer has also been named in England’s playing XI along with Josh Tongue, adding further firepower to the hosts’ pace attack.

As India seek to gain the upper hand in the series, the biggest talking point remains whether Samson can silence his critics or if the clamour for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s inclusion will grow even louder.

The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM IST.
