GANDERBAL, JUNE 5 : In a significant action ahead of the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, Ganderbal Police have busted an alleged fraud racket and arrested a man accused of impersonating a government employee to deceive vendors and service providers associated with the pilgrimage.
According to police, Police Station Sonamarg received credible information on May 27 that Mohd Ayob Jara, son of Abdul Rehman Jara and a resident of Androola in Poonch district, was operating in the Domail area while falsely presenting himself as a government official deployed along the Domail route leading to the Amarnath Cave shrine.
During the investigation, police found that the accused allegedly approached visiting vendors and service providers, promising to facilitate pilgrimage-related arrangements and access in exchange for money. By posing as a government representative, he reportedly gained the trust of prospective victims and extracted financial benefits.
Acting on the information, Police Station Sonamarg registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a detailed investigation into the matter.
The accused was arrested on the evening of June 3, 2026. Police said further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify any associates or victims linked to the case.
Police have advised vendors, service providers and other stakeholders connected with the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra to remain vigilant and verify the credentials of individuals claiming to represent government agencies before entering into any financial transactions.
