Leh, May 15 : The Department of Physical Education and Sports, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh on Thursday concluded a 10-day Ice Hockey Coaching Camp at the NDS International Ice Hockey Ring, with participating students displaying their skills in a concluding exhibition match.
The camp, organised from May 4 to May 14, introduced students to the fundamentals of ice hockey through structured sessions on skating techniques, stick handling, gameplay skills and the basic rules governing the sport. The concluding exhibition match reflected the practical training and on-ice exposure imparted during the programme.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Saket Kushwaha, attended the closing event and interacted with the participants. He appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of Physical Education and Sports in providing students access to professional training facilities at an international-standard artificial ice hockey rink.
The Vice Chancellor observed that such programmes could contribute towards strengthening winter sports culture in Ladakh while encouraging greater student participation in competitive sporting disciplines traditionally associated with the region.
Officials of the department said the coaching camp was aimed at equipping students with foundational knowledge of the sport while simultaneously promoting physical fitness, discipline, teamwork and sporting temperament among young participants.
The programme was conducted under the supervision of Jigmat Dachen and Sonam Gyatso, who were also present during the concluding ceremony.
The Department of Physical Education and Sports expressed gratitude to the Department of Youth Services and Sports, UT Ladakh for permitting the use of the NDS International Ice Hockey Ring, which facilitated the successful conduct of the training camp.
The initiative assumes importance as educational institutions in Ladakh increasingly seek to promote structured training in winter sports, particularly ice hockey, which has emerged as one of the region’s most actively pursued sporting disciplines among youth.
