NEW DELHI, March 9: Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day on Monday following relentless protests by opposition MPs demanding an immediate discussion on the escalating West Asia crisis, marking another chaotic session in the Budget proceedings.
The House, which had reconvened post-lunch after an earlier adjournment till 3 PM, descended into pandemonium as Congress, Samajwadi Party, and other opposition leaders trooped into the Well, raising slogans for a detailed government statement on the Iran-Israel conflict. Key flashpoints included Israeli strikes on Tehran’s oil depots, Iran’s alleged attacks on UAE and Bahrain desalination plants, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s martyrdom, and his son Mojtaba’s ascension as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
Speaker Om Birla’s repeated appeals for order went unheeded, prompting the final adjournment amid the din. BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad earlier blasted the opposition—led by Rahul Gandhi—for eroding Parliament’s dignity through a rare no-confidence motion against Birla and flouting House traditions. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had condemned the disruptions while affirming the government’s readiness for debate.
