Leh, Jan 25: An awareness-cum-workshop programme on medicine pricing, drug safety and prevention of substance abuse was held at Islami Public School, Leh, on Saturday. The programme was organised by the Ladakh Price Monitoring and Resource Unit (LPMRU) in collaboration with the Drug Regulatory Department and the Food Control Organisation, UT Ladakh.
The event was attended by Irfan Bari, President, Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam Youth (AMI Youth), along with its executive members. Dr. Nasreen, Assistant Controller Drugs and Controlling Authority, Drug and Food Control Organisation, UT Ladakh, was present as a resource person. Teachers and students of the school participated in large numbers.
The workshop covered monitoring of prices of medicines and medical devices, safety and effectiveness of medicines, and measures to prevent drug abuse and addiction among children and adolescents. Speakers explained the role of government agencies in fixing and monitoring medicine prices and guided students on how to check overcharging by chemists.
Participants were also informed about basic precautions to follow before using medicines, including checking labels, expiry dates and proper storage. The session aimed to make students more aware of their rights as consumers and the risks linked to unsafe use of medicines.
Special focus was given to the issue of drug abuse. The speakers stressed that teachers, parents and elders have a shared responsibility to protect young people from substance abuse and to promote healthy habits in society.
Students and faculty members took active part in the discussion and appreciated the interactive nature of the programme. AMI Youth extended full support in organising the event.
The organisers thanked Islami Public School for hosting the programme and said similar awareness drives on public health, consumer rights and drug safety would continue across Leh.
