Srinagar, Jan 23: Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) was suspended in both directions on Thursday morning following fresh snowfall in and around the Navyug Tunnel, officials said.
The Kashmir Valley experienced fresh snowfall since late Wednesday night, severely impacting road, rail, and air connectivity. Vehicular movement between Jammu and Srinagar was halted after snow accumulation made the highway unsafe for travel.
In addition to NH-44, the Mughal Road, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road, and Sinthan Road were also closed due to the snowfall. Traffic authorities advised commuters to avoid these routes until snow clearance operations complete and roads are declared safe. They urged the public to ignore rumours and check official Traffic Police channels for updates.
At least 17 flights to and from Srinagar Airport were cancelled due to ongoing snowfall and adverse weather. Airport authorities reported potential further cancellations, affecting services to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Jammu. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines for schedule updates.
Rail services on the Banihal-Baramulla section faced disruptions after authorities cancelled several passenger trains due to heavy snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir. Weather conditions remain under close monitoring, with further disruptions possible, officials added.
