LEH JAN 3: The National Human Rights Commission has directed Leh’s Deputy Commissioner and senior police officials to investigate allegations involving a minor Ladakhi girl from a tribal Buddhist community who went missing on December 26. The commission has taken cognisance of the case under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, and demanded an action-taken report within seven days.
The complaint was filed by Sagar Bhante from Bhopal, alleging that the minor girl from Khalatse went missing from her home on December 26. Her family lodged a missing complaint with Police Station Khalatse on December 28, 2025, registering FIR No. 39/2025 under Section 137(2) BNS and the POCSO Act. During police investigation, the girl was reportedly found in Srinagar with a Muslim boy.
The minor is currently under the supervision of the Child Welfare Committee and is reportedly suffering from mental trauma, according to proceedings dated January 2. The complainant has sought an impartial investigation into the role of other individuals involved, along with justice for the victim and her family, protection, counseling, and medical, psychological, and legal assistance. The complaint highlighted that due to social pressure at the local level, the sensitive case is not receiving adequate seriousness.
A bench of the NHRC presided by member Priyank Kanoongo has issued notice to the Deputy Commissioner and SSP/DIG of Leh, directing them to conduct an inquiry into the allegations. The commission has determined that the allegations prima facie appear to be violations of the victim’s human rights.
