SAMBA, Dec 2: In a major crackdown on bovine smuggling, Samba Police on Monday thwarted two separate attempts within the jurisdiction of Police Station Ghagwal and rescued 14 bovines being transported in cruel and illegal conditions. A Tata-407 and a passenger bus used in the smuggling attempts were seized on the spot.

According to officials, the first operation was launched after police received specific information from reliable sources. Acting swiftly, a team from PS Ghagwal intercepted a passenger bus (JK02CN-9009) near FCI Chowk, Suandha Jatwal. Upon checking the vehicle, police discovered six bovines cramped inside the bus, allegedly being transported illegally under inhumane conditions.

The animals were immediately rescued and shifted to a safe location. Police noted that sustained pressure on smugglers has forced them to adopt new tactics, including the use of passenger buses to dodge law enforcement.

An FIR—No. 113/2025 under Section 223 BNS and Section 11 of the PCA Act—was registered at PS Ghagwal, and further investigation is underway.

In the second incident, a naka team deployed at NHW Tapyal attempted to stop a Tata-407 vehicle (JK02CS-2696) for checking. Instead of complying, the driver sped up, rammed the vehicle into the naka barrier, and attempted to flee. Alert police personnel chased and intercepted the vehicle near Jatwal.

On inspection, eight bovines were found tied and packed inside the vehicle without valid permission, police said. The animals were rescued, and the vehicle seized.

In this case, FIR No. 112/2025 under Section 223 BNS, Section 11 PCA Act, and Section 3 of the PDPP Act was registered at PS Ghagwal.
