Leh Apex Body Vows Continuation of Peaceful Protest; Delegation Joins Hunger Strike On Day-3

Leh, Sept 12: With a call for unity, the Leh Apex Body today vowed to continue its peaceful protest until the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) agrees to engage in dialogue. Tsering Lakrook, the body’s leader, warned that the movement would persist, drawing increasing participation from villages across the Union Territory.

“The scheduled meeting with the MHA on July 28 did not take place, leaving us with no choice but to resort to non-violent protest. This movement is gaining strength, and we urge all neighboring communities to join the Anshan this Sunday,” Lakrook told reporters.

The hunger strike, strictly non-violent in nature, seeks to highlight Ladakh’s political and social grievances, including land-related concerns raised by activist Sonam Wangchuk. “If the allegations are confirmed, action must follow. Any attempt to intimidate the public will face united resistance,” Lakrook added, urging society at large to stand together to ensure Ladakh’s voice is heard.

Adding momentum to the agitation, a 16-member delegation from four major organizations across India arrived in Ladakh for a three-day fact-finding visit. The team, which includes Sanjeev Panda, is engaging with local leaders and communities to assess the region’s ongoing struggles and aspirations.

During their visit, the delegation joined a one-day hunger strike in solidarity with the people of Ladakh and later traveled to Kargil to meet residents and stakeholders. Meetings with Sonam Wangchuk and Apex Body representatives focused on governance, land rights, and broader socio-political concerns.

The delegation condemned the prolonged neglect since Ladakh became a Union Territory, noting that land rights have eroded, development promises remain unfulfilled, and administrative powers are concentrated in the UT administration—marginalizing the Hill Council. “With no legislative assembly, the people are forced into protest while their demands go unheard,” said Sanjeev Panda.

Highlighting inadequate infrastructure and underdeveloped universities, the delegation criticized the emphasis on ceremonial events over addressing the real challenges faced by local communities. They demanded Sixth Schedule status and eventual statehood to safeguard political autonomy and ensure accountability in governance.

The delegation also pledged to carry the movement nationwide, amplifying Ladakh’s demands and mobilizing wider support. “Our aim is to ensure that the struggle of Ladakh resonates across the country,” they said, underscoring the growing intensity of the protest.
