Leh, Aug 25: In a gesture resonating with spiritual warmth and diplomatic poise, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has formally expressed his appreciation to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) for its unwavering hospitality during his six-week stay in the Union Territory, while also recognising the administration’s sustained efforts in supporting Tibetan refugees through welfare measures and infrastructural assistance.
In a letter addressed to Adv Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC, the Revered Tibetan spiritual leader articulated his deep sense of gratitude for the reception accorded to him and his entourage throughout his visit. The Dalai Lama, who has frequented Ladakh for decades, described his experience in the region as both uplifting and inspiring, particularly in light of the developmental progress visible in education and economic growth.
His Holiness observed that the strides made in the socio-economic landscape of Ladakh reflect a constructive approach to governance and public welfare. By acknowledging these improvements, he underscored the role of responsive administration in enhancing the quality of life for residents while also ensuring a supportive environment for Tibetan communities who have sought refuge in Ladakh since the mid-twentieth century.
The communication further highlighted the Dalai Lama’s spiritual reflections on the devotion of Ladakhi people, which he associated with the Buddhist path of non-violence, compassion, and human solidarity. “I am a follower of the Buddha, our kind teacher. The essence of his teaching is non-violence, doing no harm to others, but being kind and compassionate towards them,” the letter read, urging individuals to cultivate warmth of heart and collective responsibility for the welfare of fellow beings.
Of particular note was His Holiness’ acknowledgment of LAHDC’s role in implementing welfare schemes of the Union Territory of Ladakh for the benefit of Tibetan refugees. The provision of basic facilities, amenities, and infrastructural support underlines, in his words, the compassionate approach of the Council and its commitment to inclusive development. He recognised that in recent years, the administration’s initiatives have substantially enhanced the living conditions of Tibetan settlers.
The Dalai Lama’s communication concluded with a message of prayers and goodwill for the leadership and people of Ladakh, reaffirming his long-standing association with the region that has historically been both a spiritual retreat and a cultural stronghold of Himalayan Buddhism.
His ongoing visits to Ladakh, viewed as occasions of profound importance by the local populace, have also served as opportunities to strengthen the bonds between the Tibetan refugee community and Ladakhi society. By publicly commending the role of LAHDC, the Dalai Lama has not only highlighted effective governance in Ladakh but also reinforced the values of mutual respect, compassion, and humanitarian cooperation.
