Leh, Aug 12: The “Mission Clean Up Indus” campaign drew to a close today with an extensive clean-up operation along the Indus River’s tributaries and surrounding areas in the Khaltse sub-division. The day-long drive began at 8:00 AM from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s Office with a pledge ceremony, where participants vowed to safeguard the river and its ecosystem.
Faculty members and students of Government Degree College (GDC) Khaltse joined hands with local government staff and residents to collect and remove waste from riverbanks and nearby public spaces. The event marked the culmination of a week of environmental activities hosted by the college under the same mission.
Earlier in the campaign, the college campus had been the venue for awareness programmes focused on the ecological importance of the Indus River and the delicate balance of Ladakh’s environment. Organisers said the initiative aimed to encourage community involvement in protecting natural resources and reducing pollution in the region’s water bodies.
The cleanup concluded with renewed calls for continued public participation in preserving the health of Ladakh’s waterways, underscoring the pressing need to keep the Indus River free from waste.
