Jammu, Jul 19: Over 6,000 devotees commenced their sacred journey to the Amarnath cave shrine as another batch of pilgrims departed from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu early Saturday morning.
According to officials, a total of 6,365 pilgrims, including 1,499 women, 441 children, and 135 sadhus and sadhvis, began their trek to the holy site nestled in the south Kashmir Himalayas. The group moved in well-organized convoys headed towards the two traditional base camps—Nunwan-Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal—under comprehensive security cover.
Of the total, 3,514 pilgrims took the Pahalgam route via 119 vehicles, while 2,851 chose the Baltal route in 92 vehicles, ensuring a steady and regulated flow of yatris.
The Amarnath Yatra, which spans 38 days, began on July 3 and will conclude on August 9, aligning with the Raksha Bandhan festival. Pilgrims undertake this annual spiritual journey to offer prayers at the sacred cave temple, located at an altitude of 3,880 meters, which houses the naturally formed ice Shivlingam—a revered symbol of Lord Shiva.
So far, more than 2.75 lakh devotees have performed darshan at the holy shrine this season.
