Leh, Jul 18: Students at PM Shree High School Chushot Yokma participated in a one-day awareness program aimed at improving health and lifestyle choices, hosted through a joint effort by the Ladakh Environment and Health Organisation (LEHO) and the Health Department of UT Ladakh.

The event brought together health professionals and educators to speak to young students about the importance of a well-rounded diet, personal hygiene, and the challenges of adolescence. Nutritionist Rigzin Yangdol spoke to the students about common eating patterns in Ladakhi households, pointing out that many meals are heavy on carbohydrates and low in fresh vegetables and fruits. She encouraged students to pay closer attention to what they eat and how it affects their long-term health.

Clinical Psychologist Jigmet Wangmo addressed the group with a straightforward discussion on the risks of tobacco use. She explained how early habits like smoking can often lead to more harmful addictions, and she urged students to think carefully about the choices they make during their school years.

Dr. Mohammed Deen, founder of LEHO, raised concerns about children’s mental health and vision, noting that screen time is replacing outdoor play. He also spoke about the growing trend of fast food consumption, which he linked to poor physical and emotional health. Dr. Deen advised students to cut down on time spent on mobile games and instead focus on building healthier daily routines.

During the session, Deputy Director of LEHO, Tashi Thokmat, shared an update on recent development work carried out at the Differently Abled Children’s Hostel. LEHO has set up a greenhouse and installed solar-powered bathrooms and lighting systems—completed at a cost of ₹17.66 lakhs. The improvements are aimed at making life better and more comfortable for children with special needs.

Headmaster Tashi Wangyal thanked LEHO for their continued efforts in supporting the school and hostel. He acknowledged the importance of such programs in shaping the attitudes and habits of students.

The awareness session ended on a positive note, with active participation from students and staff. Organizers and speakers agreed that more such programs will help young people across Ladakh make better choices for a healthier future.
